Each type uses different ingredients and performs different tasks so it is important to consider what your needs are and what each type has to offer.

Anti-decay toothpaste

The most commonly used type of toothpaste, this variety uses fluoride to clean teeth and protect against decay and damage to the enamel of the teeth.  Adults need a toothpaste that has at least 1,000 ppm (parts per million) or more for fluoride content in order to guard against tooth decay.  Children toothpaste contains usually is made with no more than 500ppm fluoride so it is not as risky if children swallow small amounts. Your dentist is likely already suggesting you use this type of toothpaste.

Desensitizing toothpaste

The active ingredients in this type of toothpaste work to provide relief from sensitive teeth that cause pain when exposed to hot or cold. Most of these kinds of toothpaste accomplish this in two ways.  First, they interrupt the way the nerves in the teeth react to stimuli and slow the message response, and second, they help to strengthen the enamel coating of the teeth so extreme heat and cold do not both them as much as before. Of the different kinds of toothpaste, this is also a common one.

Anti-calculus toothpaste

This toothpaste type is a little harder to find and is among the newer types now available on the market.  It has ingredients that the manufacturers claim will combat the buildup of plaque and hard deposits on the teeth. Thus, it reduces the rate of calculus formation. The active ingredient usually is some form of Pyrophosphate or Zinc Citrate. When it comes to the many different kinds of toothpaste available, ones that fight the calcification of plaque are among the least known of them all.

Anti-plaque toothpaste

This kind of toothpaste prevents plaque buildup, decreases the toxic effects of bacterial growth, reverses the damage done to the teeth and gums, and helps to reduce the chances of getting gum disease. It can also help slow the progression of tooth decay and keeps teeth healthier and stronger for longer times between brushings. There are several different types available so it is important to check the ingredients and talk to your dentists about which type is right for your dental needs.

This kind of toothpaste has a coarse and abrasives consistency to it which works to polish ways stains. Other ingredients in the toothpaste help whiten and clean teeth.
